THE CHALLENGE

A media player that could carry the mission

The Disability Justice Project publishes documentary storytelling by disabled human rights defenders worldwide. They needed a media player that toggled audio descriptions, allowed caption styling, and supported interactive transcripts, fully accessible, after their existing Able Player setup broke with YouTube policy changes.

  1. Interactive transcripts and manually loaded captions that no longer synced reliably.
  2. A need to toggle audio descriptions on and off.
  3. Caption styling that users could adjust.
  4. A player that had to meet WCAG 2.1 AA without a costly full custom build.
OUR APPROACH

Enhance Able Player, then keep the site healthy

Rather than build from scratch, we enhanced the open-source Able Player to meet DJP's needs, integrated it into WordPress, and moved into ongoing maintenance, security, and monitoring.

Player accessibility enhancements

Pause and play for speech synthesis, focus management, dynamic notifications, and WCAG-compliant styling and behavior.

iOS and styling fixes

iOS-specific workarounds and styling options so the player matches the site and performs on Apple devices.

WordPress integration

Integrated Able Player into the WordPress CMS with a YouTube fallback for a smooth transition.

Site improvements

Fixed social-post image alt text, video ordering, featured-image cropping, and an admin-managed events section.

Ongoing support and monitoring

Maintenance, security hardening after a site hack, and a monthly monitoring program.
