THE CHALLENGE

Flyers as flat images, unreadable by assistive technology

Peachjar distributes digital flyers to parents, students, and communities nationwide. Content creators upload an image, and early versions ran OCR and dropped the raw text into the image's alt attribute. Well-intentioned, but it created real barriers, and the challenge was to protect creator flexibility while making the content genuinely accessible.

  1. Long, unstructured OCR strings placed in image alt text, hard to navigate by screen reader.
  2. Flyers left as flat images, so text zoom and customization were limited for low-vision users.
  3. No structured information: no headings, lists, or reading order for end users.
  4. A parent experience (login, profile, browsing, flyer access) that needed a full accessibility review.
OUR APPROACH

Audit, remediate, then rethink the flyer pipeline

We audited the parent experience end to end, delivered developer-ready remediation, then partnered on modernizing the flyer pipeline so image content becomes structured, accessible HTML that creators still control.

Full parent-experience audit

IAAP-certified specialists and Trusted Testers evaluated login, profile and settings, flyer browsing, and flyer access, both manually and with automated tools.

Developer-ready remediation

A granular defect log plus remediation instructions written for developers: semantic HTML, focus management, accessible names, and correct ARIA usage.

Structured-HTML flyer pipeline

We helped transform OCR output from a flat string into semantically structured HTML, with a review interface so creators edit and confirm before publishing.

VPAT and ACR issuance

After verification cycles we issued a VPAT and ACR aligned with WCAG 2.1 AA, then refreshed it after the platform rebuild.

Ongoing support and consulting

We continue to help Peachjar answer accessibility questions from schools and districts and to build accessibility into their roadmap early.

THE IMPACT

Accessible flyers, without losing creator freedom

  • Users can choose the original flyer or a fully structured HTML version with headings, lists, and reading order.
  • Content creators keep their creative freedom, with a review step to confirm the structured output.
  • The parent experience brought to WCAG 2.1 AA across login, profile, browsing, and flyer access.
  • A VPAT and ACR issued and then refreshed after the platform rebuild.
  • An ongoing partnership that keeps accessibility in the roadmap as the platform evolves.
